The most ancient human presences date back to Neolithic, here evidenced by findings discovered in the excavation of two villages in Marcianese area and Fossacesia.
The archaeological excavations in Lanciano have revealed the remains of a wide inhabited centre developed from the late Bronze Age (18th-20th centuries BC) and the first part of the Iron Age (9th-8th centuries BC).
Near the abbey of Saint Giovanni in Venere in Fossacesia have been found tombs attributable to a wide Italic necropolis related to the temple dedicated to Venus.
Findings coming from the territory around Lanciano confirm the existence of necropolis used between the 6th and 5th century BC.
Between the 4th and 2nd century BC existed in Lanciano two sanctuaries situated one next to the Eucharistic Miracle Sanctuary and the other probably next to the church of Saint Biagio.
The archaeological excavations have permitted to locate at the top of Lancianovecchia hill the old Roman Municipality.
During the late Middle Ages Lanciano was as important as the first period of the Imperial age. The town was dominated by the Byzantines until the middle of the 7th century.
As suggested by the presence of small worship places the population settled in scattered units in Lancianovecchia district (9th-12th centuries AD).
During the Middle Ages Lanciano lived a period of great development thanks to its fairies, craft and commerce with the middle-Adriatic area.
